STATUS: Full-Time Hourly, Non-Exempt



Working closely with other members of the Development and Communications team and reporting to the Director of Development, the SJLI Communications Coordinator is responsible for creating, executing and monitoring the organization’s communications strategies. This role involves creating public relations and marketing materials such as press releases, blog posts, and newsletters. This role also involves tracking and reporting analytics on marketing and communications campaigns and coordinating promotional events. 

This position plays a key role in interfacing with other members of the Development and Communications team by sharing the mission and vision of the organization.

The ideal candidate will be an active listener and engaging storyteller, a quick learner and problem solver, strong attention to detail, ability to manage multiple tasks, and an understanding of social justice. 


  • Assist in developing and implementing a Marketing and Communications plan and calendar to elevate public awareness of SJLI’s programs
  • Write copy/content to support communications and marketing efforts, including newsletters, website copy, and brochures and press releases
  • Assist communications team in developing and implementing a communications strategy designed to further company objectives
  • Monitor analytics and create reports detailing the successes and failures of communications campaigns and strategies
  • Stay up to date on industry trends and make recommendations for adjustments to communications strategies and practices
  • Respond to media inquiries and maintain relationships with journalists and other members of the press
  • Plan press conferences and other promotional events 
  • Coordinate volunteers, support staff, vendors to support promotional events
  • Perform outreach to press outlets, magazines, influencers and build strategic partnerships to grow brand recognition
  • Strengthen SJLI’s current marketing and communications efforts
  • Build team knowledge of communications efforts and protocol; collaborate with team members across the organization on content creation
  • Assist in the production of outreach materials (displays, brochures, flyers, articles)
  • Regularly source and post relevant content on social media platforms
  • Assist with community outreach and marketing efforts for donor activities and  special events
  • Explore collaborative and partnership opportunities with community members, public agencies, nonprofit organizations and corporations
  • Support the Resource Development team as needed


The Communications Coordinator will be a highly motivated self-starter with 3-5 years of experience, preferably in communications for nonprofit organizations, and a bachelor’s degree in English, journalism, or a related field.

  • The ability to work collaboratively with a diverse group of staff members and program partners; 
  • The capacity to multitask and manage multiple projects and assignments, often with competing deadlines; 
  • Knowledge of email marketing software such as Constant Contact or a similar program
  • Proven knowledge of communications and marketing ethics and best practices
  • Proficient public speaking abilities are an asset
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Familiarity and or experience with youth development and social justice, a plus.



  • Bachelor's degree (or equivalent) with a minimum three years of communications or marketing role (nonprofit experience preferred)
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel and PowerPoint; Canva; Squarespace, Adobe Suite; 
  • Superior time management and organizational skills and ability to meet deadlines
  • An analytical mind and ability to think critically
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
  • Driver’s license
  • Basic bookkeeping skills
  • Excellent organizational, time management and communication skills
