SJLI Program Development and Expansion Associate - VISTA


Reports to: Urban Scholars Houston Managing Director 


Status: Entry Level VISTA One year Full-time Service Opportunity, starting August 31, 2020 to August 30, 2021 (with the possibility of a second year renewal)


Overview:  SJLI is dedicated to improving the education, health and well-being of youth and communities of color by empowering them to enact social change through research, training and community mobilization. We privilege the ideas, voice and leadership of our youth and community members. We envision communities where education empowers individuals to use their agency for the purpose of improving each other’s lives.  We educate and empower youth and community members to identify and rectify injustice. We build capacity for individuals and communities to advocate for their needs. We train and build leaders, deliver effective programs and provide neighborhoods with resources.


We empower through education, create thriving communities and change systems.  Our programs have impact.  More than 1,619 high school students have been served through our Urban Scholars Program; we teach 250 Healthy Living lifestyles classes annually; and average a 94% high school graduation rate among our high school seniors.  Our 100 Seeds of Change Initiative built 103 community, school, neighborhood and household gardens. We increase food security by distributing thousands of pounds of free fresh produce to families and households in Inglewood.  We are also working to end the school to prison pipeline.


The ideal candidate for the position being hired will have a passion for social justice, demonstrated experience in program delivery, working with middle and high school students in an educational setting, and working in a community setting with diverse populations.  Some experience with tutoring or academic counseling is desirable..


Position Summary: This position is a service opportunity in association with the AmeriCorps/VISTA program with the Corporation for National and Community Service at the Urban Scholars program in Houston, Texas. This position is responsible for expanding SJLI’s capacity by assisting in the delivery of the Urban Scholars program and directly supporting both on-site school instructors and students in the program.  The Program Development and Expansion Associate(s) will work under the supervision of the Houston Managing Director.  The Program Development and Expansion Associate(s) will be instrumental in ensuring program continuity, providing ongoing program development, working toward achievement of individual students’ academic outcomes, and maintaining data on program milestones and benchmarks. This position will work both remotely and in person at the Houston Urban Scholars program office and when necessary, Houston Independent School District (HISD) school sites.

Responsibilities:

  • Provides essential support for Urban Scholars Houston program delivery at school sites
  • Develop, maintain and update an Urban Scholars Program Implementation Calendar
  • Assists with coaching of Urban Scholars curriculum to on-site school instructors
  • Supports individual students at school sites with wrap-around support including counseling, referrals to services and other activities
  • Provide operational and  administrative support to Managing Director
  • Plans and coordinates college tours and other field trips 
  • Assists with Urban Scholars intake application process 
  • Communicates with on-site school site instructors regarding program area needs
  • Plans and coordinates school site and community events
  • Communicates with on-site school teachers, students, school staff and parents to ensure the effectiveness of the program
  • Identifies guest speakers and other special guests in support of Urban Scholars curriculum units and lesson plans
  • Track program outcomes by entering student data using various online and information mechanisms
  • Track individual student progress by reviewing grades and transcripts
  • Consistently collect and organize program data into reports.
  • Analyze student and program data
  • Provide administrative support for at the assigned school sites


Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in related field 
  • Experience in an educational setting (tutoring, after school program, teaching)
  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission and values of the Social Justice Learning Institute
  • Experience with databases, analysis and generating reports
  • Highly organized, resourceful and self-motivated with exceptional time management and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team, and to serve as a conduit for information to and from other members
  • An entrepreneurial spirit, a creative mind, and a positive attitude
  • Exceptional interpersonal, written and oral communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office required
  • Can work independently, are extremely organized, punctual and can complete tasks on time.  
  • Experience working within the nonprofit sector a plus
